I was a little disappointed in this one. I expected to read more about the actual battles (details), but they are generally missing. A little too much narrative is spent on social situations involving the author and other officers carrying on with the ladies (nothing bad, just boring). I felt let down by the ending because it was so abrupt. You spend the whole book being given insight on the character, personality and disposition of General Stuart, only to be stunned when the author simply says that he was killed at a certain place: no details. There is very little description about Stuart's activity at Gettysburg, where his absence before the battle remained unexplained. Another point that seems important is there is no mention of his calvary clashing with Custer's calvary at Gettysburg.Product details

This book is so detailed that it doesn't actually fit the description of "a good read." That said, though, it provides incredibly good descriptions of camp life in battles and during the war period. You leave it with a sense that you understand the whole affair better.
Recommend this book to anyone who wants to really know the horror and bonding of men in battle. This officer was present at all but one major battle of the army of northern Virginia knowing intimately JEB Stuart and many others. A eye witness account of so many important historical moments that he saw and participated in. A unforgettable read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a first hand account of one who joined the army of the Confederate States and survived many, many battles and was present when General Robert E Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses Grant.
It is a great account of the day to day actions of the Army, how they rotated for food, their living conditions etc. Masterfully recounts his personal experiences without prejudice toward his former enemies.
I really enjoyed this memoir written by WW Blackford, an officer who served on Gen Stuart's staff and had some other adventures during the cvil war. This is not a detailed history of the campaigns (there are lots of good sources for that info). Blackford gives sufficient context so the informed reader can follow along and place each event in the bigger campaign. I mostly didn't bother to do that. Instead, I just enjoyed his rich descriptions of camp life, the colorful personalities he met, and his personal adventures. Blackford was a good writer who paints vivid pictures which I think most history buffs will enjoy.
This is a valuable resource for Civil War buffs--a first-person account from W.W. Blackford, who served as a Confederate officer through nearly every major campaign under Robert E. Lee's command. Blackford was clearly a great admirer of J.E.B. Stuart and writes extensively about him, but the book is appropriately an autobiography that does Blackford well. To be sure, he is a product of his time, and makes appallingly ignorant comments about slavery (insisting they were "happy" with their lot in life, for example). But he also makes many honest and frank assessments of leaders of both the Confederate and Union armies and does a good job of describing life in the cavalry and in the trenches. His account of the events at Appomattox is compelling.
An amazing memoir! A definite must have for any Southerner for his/her library. Blackford is a primary source reference frequently used in the narration of The Sectional War and some of his battlefield accounts make you hold your breath for his heroism. He gives a real view of life in the cavalry alongside the flamboyant and lovable JEB Stuart. I can't recommend it highly enough!
Blackford does an excellent job at giving us an eye witness account of the Civil War through the perspective of a genuine southern cavalier. Not only does he do a wonderful job at characterizing some of the war's most polarizing figures (J.E.B. Stuart, R.E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, etc.), but he also does an interesting job at quelling the often-ascribed-to perception that the Southern army was a raggedy, sorry looking force of half starved scare crows. He goes to great lengths to show that the southerner went to war not so much to keep alive slavery, but more because of regional pride and a distaste for how the north looked down at them with an air of moral superiority. At certain points he'll have you grimacing at his descriptions of artillery fatalities, and at another have you laughing at how they pulled the rug out from some of the north's proudest leaders and regiments. It amazes me at how non-chalant he was at losing some of his closest friends and family. Definitely a great read for any war enthusiast.
